Don Emde at Loudon ’72

Don Emde on the grid before the start of the 1972 Loudon Classic at Bryar Motorsports Park in Loudon, New Hampshire. Just a few months earlier Emde made history when he became the first rider to win the Daytona 200 on a two-stroke motorcycle, a Yamaha TR3. His dad Floyd had won the 200 as well, making them the first, and to date, only father son to win the prestigious race. Lady luck wasn’t with Emde in the national at Loudon. He suffered a mechanical issue that forced him out halfway through the race. But it wasn’t a totally bad weekend for the Californian. He finished a solid fourth in the Combined Lightweight race the day before sandwiched between the Kawasakis of third-place finisher Yvon DuHamel and Paul Smart, who was fifth.
