Mat Mladin at Phoenix (1997)

Mat Mladin gives his infamous glare to Dean Adams as he sits on the pit wall at Phoenix International Raceway in February of 1997. I’m sure having to race on a track like PIR didn’t help Mat’s mood. The pairing of Mladin and Ferracci Ducati seemed, on paper at least, to be a match made in Superbike heaven, but even though he won four rounds that year, including his first ever AMA Superbike victory on this particular weekend in Phoenix, Mat finished third in the standings and did not re-sign with Ducati in ’98, instead going back to Yoshimura Suzuki. I don’t know the reasons why Mat left Suzuki for Ducati only to return after one season. I’m sure there’s a good story that goes with it. 📷Dean Adams/SuperbikePlanet.com
