A great photo showing the old Pagoda at Road America as the AMA Superbike race was about to start in 1982. On the left of the photo, you can see Wayne Rainey in a rain suit next to his #60 Kawasaki. That’s Luther Wikle (No. 205) on his Honda, Harry Vanderlinden (No. 96 Suzuki), Richard Chambers (No. 76 Kawasaki), Harry Klinzmann (No. 31 Kawasaki), Thad Wolff (No. 37 Suzuki), Ernie Kicklighter (No. 201 Kawasaki) and Ronald Miller (No. 259 Suzuki). On the subject of the Pagoda, I remember being in the Pagoda during this timeframe and while it gave Road America extra charm, I swear I felt the structure sway in the wind, and I always got a bit of an uneasy feeling being in the building. Legend is the Pagoda was hastily built just days before the first race at the track in 1955. I don’t think sound engineering was upmost during its construction, but no matter, Road America just kept building onto the Pagoda over the years. It went away in 1990 to make way for the expansion of the paddock area of the track. 📷Gary Van Voorhis #roadamerica#amasuperbike#waynerainey#pagoda#elkhartlake#superbike
Thanks for the photo, Larry. I sure miss the old Road America pagoda and road signs…reminds me of good times on the track with friends! Road A has done a nice job of updating over the years, however.
Mike, Did you every go into the Pagoda? I remember going in there for the first time and thinking to myself that I may have personally pushed the carrying capacities of the shack past its limit.
No never went in there. I did go into the old start/finish tower at Laguna once and was amazed how it was still standing…termite holes everywhere! I imagine Road A was similar…
I was there he crashed last turn in heat race, so he started back row in finale, I still he was in grass because he passed many people on grid, then blew away everyone
