Had a great phone conversation with retired photographer extraordinaire Dan Mahony today. It was great to hear from Dan, who’d been battling through some health issues of late. I am going through my files of hundreds of thousands of racing images to try to find and pull out his images specifically to scan and get to him. He lost much of his stuff in a fire several years back, but thanks to many of his friends who bought prints from him over the years, they’ve been able to restore at least a small portion of what he lost in the fire. So I found probably several hundred of his images in a four-hour search today and man, so many of them are pure gems. Take this shot for example, Paul Bostrom and Kenny Roberts going bar to bar at Ascot Park in the mid-1970s! Pure classic. Check out Roberts’ left foot has been flipped back, possibly by contact with Bostrom’s bike. Just such a cool image and Dan shot these images with pretty minimalistic gear even for the time. He knew what worked and stuck with it. Said he hated to make the switch to digital in his final years of shooting. I’ll be scanning these prints for days and I am so looking forward to it.
