Dr. Bob Meister (No. 26) leads the pack in the Expert Heavyweight Supertwins final at the Daytona Race of Champions in October of 1991. Meister raced a highly modified Honda Hawk 750 that was fast and handled. You may notice the other No. 26 in the pack, none other than multi-time AMA Battle of the Twins Champ Jimmy Adamo on his potent Ducati 851 Superbike. Regardless of how strong Meister’s Honda was, it was no match at Daytona for Adamo’s 851, but the race turned into the best of the ’91 edition of ROC. Adamo worked his way up to the tailpipe of Meister’s Honda with the idea of just following him around until the last lap, where he would presumably twist the Ducati’s throttle and blow the little Honda into the weeds. But what happened was Adamo’s Ducati developed a gas tank leak and lost the pressure it needed to feed the big Superbike’s engine. So on the last lap Adamo twisted the throttle to draft around the Honda, but the bike did not respond like he’d hoped and Dr. Bob held on and won the race by inches.
