The Action Track Comeback

I came across this Dave Hoenig image that surprised me a bit. I clearly recalled the classic 1970s AMA Grand National races at Terre Haute’s Action Track won by legends such as David Aldana, Corky Keener, Mike Kidd and Kenny Roberts. But after Gary Scott won a controversial crash-plagued event there in 1977, AMA Grand National Championship races became a thing of the past at the Action Track. But then came this one-off race 20 years later, where a new generation of riders took on the challenging banked half-mile. On this June night in 1997, it was TCR’s Will Davis (center) coming through to win Terre Haute over Scott Parker (right) and Kevin Atherton (left). (Dave Hoenig photo)
