This photo shows the start of the last ever AMA/CCS Middleweight Team Challenge race in September of 1994 at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. The AMA dropped the endurance series from AMA Pro Racing events after the ’94 season. This was a drama filled race. AGV Sport led the standings coming into the final round, but a flat tire in this race cost them the title. Instead the championship went to Moto Liberty/Honda. This photo shows Northwest Racing’s Brad Hazen (No. 3) leading the pack into the first turn at Road Atlanta on the team’s Honda CBR600F2. Jamie Bowman is on the No. 1 Moto Liberty/Honda on another F2. Bowman would take the lead on the first lap and he, along with teammate Takahito Mori, would win the race as well as the title. That’s AGV Sport’s Scott Zampach (No. 5) coming around the outside of the turn.
I was the team captain for AGV Sport, that flat tire was completely my fault. Being a young and inexperienced mechanic and tuner, I used a rubber valve stem in the rear wheel. I am not sure how or why it passed tech inspection. The valve imploded in Gravity Cavity. My back up wheel had a rain slick on it which would have been a mess to send out on the track.
