Riders line up for an AMA TT race at the Fountain Curve Course in Brownsburg, Indiana, in 1939 or 1940. Check out well-known racer Rody Rodenberg on the far right TT racing a BMW!

A friend gave me a copy machine reproduction of a photo of riders lined up for the Brownsburg TT AMA race in either 1939 or 1940. It was of special interest to me since I lived most of my life in Brownsburg and had never heard of the races.

Only three riders are ID’d on the photo, Deb Moore, Ralph Moore and Rody Rodenberg. Both Ralph and Rody were well-known national-level riders.

If anyone know additional information, such as race reports, the precise location of this track or has photos from this track please leave comments below.

The only notice I found of an event at this track was from an old Indianapolis Star story from August 11, 1940, which reads:

Motorcycle Race Billed Next Week Brownsburg, Ind., Aug. 10. (Special) The Fountain Curve Course, located two miles northwest of here, will be the scene of the second motorcycle racing program of the season sponsored by the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Club of Indianapolis, next Sunday, club officials announced today. Containing two steep hills and several hairpin turns, the Fountain Curve course is one of the best tourist trophy tracks in the Middle West.

It is 4-10ths of a mile long and has an oiled surface. Billed as a three-star affair, next Sunday’s program will be sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association and is expected to attract the outstanding riders of the Middle West.

Former Winners to enter. Two winners in the previous races Open Expert Champion Mark Sherman of Elwood and Amateur Expert Champion Norman Dovey of Anderson have signified their intention of defending their laurels, club officials said. Novice, amateur and expert classes will compete on the program which will include eight events. The opening test will start at 2 p.m. Early entries may be sent to the club headquarters in Indianapolis, but last-minute entries also will be accepted at the track.

Update:

I found this in a 1941 Greencastle newspaper.

  1. I just listed some ticket stubs on eBay that go along with this information. They are fairly rare; I can’t find a whole lot of information on them…thank-you for this page; it helped me out.
