Mark Miller leads Kurtis Roberts and Josh Hayes in the Loudon, N.H., round of the AMA Formula Xtreme Series at New Hampshire International Speedway in June of 1999. Miller set a class track record of 1:12.291 en route to qualifying on the pole for this race on the Attack Performance Yamaha R1. Miller led the final leg of the twice red-flagged final, but during the red-flag breaks his team was chasing the set-up on his Yamaha and he said he nearly crashed several times and never felt confident with the handling. Erion Racing Honda’s Nicky Hayden went on to win the race over Hayes. Miller held on for third over Roberts. This photo is from the lens of Tom Riles, arguably the leading racing photographer of this era. This was near the end of the film era and you can see just how vivid film could be. The film used in this photo was Kodak Royal Gold 200. Riles always shot Nikon cameras.
