Martin Wimmer: Grand Prix Rider/Mechanic

Things have changed quite a bit in Motorcycle Grand Prix racing in recent decades. In the 1980s it wasn’t all that uncommon to see a GP rider pitch in and help with the wrenching, as GP rider Martin Wimmer illustrates in this photo by the legendary photographer/journalist Henny Ray Abrams, taken at Mugello in May of 1985. Keep in mind Wimmer was coming off a 250 Grand Prix victory in his home GP in Germany one week earlier (beating Freddie Spencer by over 11 seconds at Hockenheim) and won the pole on this weekend in Mugello. Wimmer had a decade-long GP career, primarily in the 250cc class. He won a total of three 250cc GPs during his career.

  1. Good to see pix of Martin Wimmer. When living iinside or outside Gemany, he’s one rider it was worth following. Wimmer and the late great Ralf Waldmann tried their best to save MZ 2009-12.
