Horn vs. Tanner at Blackhawk Farms (1986)

Chris Horn (No. 21) leads Mark Tanner (No. 22) at in a WERA Regional sprint race at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in August of 1986. Horn was one half of the WERA National Endurance team Horn Brothers Racing with his brother John. They famously won the overall in a WERA National Endurance event at Grattan one year after the track had been resurfaced and the pavement not yet cured, which caused just about every team to crash, some multiple times. The Horns were cool guys and always had a fun crew around them.

In this season Tanner was an intense first-year expert. He went down to Talladega with his Suzuki in March of that year and led most of the B Production (the very first Suzuki GSXR Cup-paying) race before getting passed by Ron Ewerth and eventual winner Doug Polen in the closing laps. Tanner could be pretty aggressive at times and once after practice my buddy Terry Hampton came into the pits at Grattan, pissed at a move Tanner made on him. A steaming Hamp stomped off to give Tanner a piece of his mind, only to make an about face when he actually got closer to Tanner’s pits. Tanner was emerging from his leathers revealing his ripped physique, featuring massive biceps. Suddenly Hampton turned around and decided it might be best if he talked to the kid later when he’d cooled off a bit.

  1. It strikes me that this photo shows another of that magical year where the established Yamaha FZ750 and new Suzuki GSXR750 battled wheel to wheel at club races across the country all season.

  2. Funny story Larry. Mark was not the typical small rider, he must have been 200 pounds. He looked like he should play football instead of finessing his bike at the front of the pack.

  3. Not surprised to see Chris Horn racing big bikes.
He and his brother John were pretty active as youngsters at all the mx tracks in and around ny.
    Great guys.
