Coming up behind Diedrich is a 16-year-old rookie John Hopkins, racing the Valvoline/Emgo Suzuki GSXR750. Biketoberfest 1999 was the first visit to Daytona for Hopper and he came through in a big way, finally getting around Diedrich to win the race. Hopkins went on to win four races at the CCS event that weekend. Just three years later Hopkins was racing in MotoGP.
