Jacob “On the Jazz”

Minnesota road racer John Jacob (No. 17) leads New Jersey’s John Condron (No. 45) and Pennsylvania’s  Doug Tosten late in the AMA 600 Supersport race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in August of 1990. These guys had a great battle to finish inside the top 10 at Mid-Ohio that day that went down to the final lap. It was Jacob edging Tosten and Condron, in that order to get tenth. All three were on Yamaha FZR600s. Jacob was a semi-regular in AMA Supersport racing in the late 1980s and early ‘90s. He scored a slew of top-10 finishes in AMA 600 Supersport. His top 600 Supersport result was a fourth in the October race at Daytona in in 1989. Jacob also raced in the Brainerd round of World Superbike in 1989 and 1990. I heard the phrase “He was on the Jazz!” quite a bit in racing those days, popularized in the 1980s by a phase used by a character in the TV show The A-Team.  It seemed like a cool catch phrase in those days I suppose, but it definitely has aged and is rarely heard today.
