Jeff Morrow races his Suzuki out of the final turn in front of an unidentified rider at Road Atlanta during the very first Suzuki GSXR Cup Finals in November of 1986. Morrow qualified for the GSXR Cup Finale via his strong finishes in Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association (OMRRA) competition. Morrow was somewhat overshadowed in the OMRRA by riders like Keith Pinkstaff, Joe Pittman, Tom Walther, Steve Crevier and Mike Sullivan, who were better known for racing in AMA National Road Races. Nevertheless Morrow held his own against higher profile competition, scoring top results in Suzuki-paying races. At Road Atlanta Morrow had a tough weekend. In the Suzuki Cup Finals he finished 16th in theGSXR1100 and 22nd in the GSXR750 races.

During that period the racers from the SE Region held an unfair advantage at Rd Atlanta. With a half dozen WERA and CCS events held at Rd A each season, we were able to come to grips with the most difficult track in America. Half the turns were blind turns (after the crest) and gravity cavity was a gut check followed by the ‘window to heaven’ under the bridge. Plus it was a hi-speed momentum track where the fast guys averaged over 100mph. It took some time to learn, and the fellas who showed up at the GNF without prior track knowledge were severely handicapped.
Today’s neutered Rd A is quite different.

Good points Doug. I remember when Jeff Heino raced Road Atlanta for the first time during a WERA National Endurance event. I was there when he pulled into the pits and looked at Dave Schlosser and shook his head. I talked to him and he freely admitted he was more than a bit intimidated by the place. He eventually got it down. I think that’s why so many first timers would try to get on an endurance team there before the GNF sprint races started.
