Commando Takes Command

Stan Keyes gets a great launch on his 1972 Norton Commando during an AHRMA race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, in June of 1989. Keyes went on to beat Pete Watson and Rob Tuluie to win the 750 Sportsman class that day. This was a weekend where AHRMA ran on the same weekend at Road America as the AMA Superbike Championship.

  1. WAAAAY Cool, Yep Stan’s Norton was and is still fast , I will post more about that later how ever I am super stoked about seeing my XS650 in the pic with Rob on board.
The day before the 750 Sportsman race, the trans on my 305 Super Hawk locked up at high speed coming out of turn 7 low siding and sending me into a long slide and roll so next day I really didn’t feel up to racing as I had slid for a long time on the right, heating up the leather and blistering out a chunk of my right knee, Robs Norton wasn’t working very well so I loaned him my XS , with no track time other than the hot lap before the start Rob finished 3rd, not bad at all, plus the XS engine had only Hi Comp 650 pistons and a little port work with a stock XS-2 cam shaft, BUB pipes and 34 Mikuni’s … A street motor.

  2. That’s my dad! I was a pit brat back then. I didn’t go to that race but heard all the stories (I’ve always been dad’s biggest fan). I did go to most of the races that year and the combined AHRMA/ AMA rounds shaped my future in racing. Dad is still racing that same Norton today…I don’t think he’ll ever stop racing!
