Odom Up Front at Daytona

Jimmy Odom, on the No. 18 Yamaha, leads another Yamaha mounted rider Frank Gillespie (No. 76) and George Kerker (No. 90, who was racing a Honda, in the 1972 Daytona 200. Odom was best known as a flat tracker. The Northern Californian won AMA Grand Nationals on the Houston Short Track and Corona (Calif.) Half-Mile in 1971. But Odom was a solid road racer as well. He scored four top-10 results at AMA National Road races, during a time when very few pavement races were on the schedule. He always seemed to come up with a good performance at Daytona. He finished fifth in the 200 in 1971 and in ’72 scored another top-10 result with a seventh. George Kerker is best known for founding the motorcycle exhaust company he named after himself.
