Kipp and Schmidt Side by Side at Grattan

Tom Kipp (No. 33) and Dave Schmidt (No. 183) race side by side through a turn at Grattan during a WERA Spring race in April of 1987. Kipp was on a Yamaha FZR750 and Schmidt aboard a Suzuki GSXR750. Coming up just behind the leading duo is Ben Beasley (No. 441). Kipp won two races at Grattan that day (A and B Superbike) and of course went on to become a factory racer and one of the leading AMA Supersport racers of the era.

  1. Thanks Larry! Hugely under-appreciated talent in this pic! Schmidt was so smooth and Ben Beasley was absolutely fierce at times.. I remember showers of sparks and gravel from the pipes and pegs on his poor FZ750 in 86.

  2. For sure Dave was a real talent who always looked super smooth going warp speed. Ben had the distinction of being in the very first race that paid Suzuki GSXR money at Little Talladega. He was one of the guys on the already established FZ750s up against the new Suzukis.
