Two-Time National Winner Dave Busby

How many of you road racing fans out there knew that Dave Busby scored not one, but two AMA 250 Grand Prix wins during his career in the class during the 1980s? Busby was one of those riders who sort of ran just beneath the radar of the factory bosses, but when you look at his record you find the Northern Californian had some pretty impressive results. Busby won his first 250GP at Elkhart Lake in 1983. His other victory came at Riverside in 1984. Busby also scored podiums at Laguna Seca in 1980 and Sears Point in 1984. He finished ranked in the top 10 in the AMA 250GP class four times. In 1982 Busby won the Long Beach Grand Prix 250cc GP Invitational on the street course over Alan Labrosse and Sam McDonald. It wasn’t and AMA National (it was sanctioned by the AFM), and riders faced bare concrete walls, manhole covers and any other obstacles you’d expect on a street circuit.

  1. Busbomb, I think, won the 1st one on a hybrid, air cooled TD3 in a newer TZ chassis? His father was the Motorsport editor at the Contra Costa Times in the bay area and lived in Concord. Many years ago.

  2. I was there at the race with my uncle Floyd and David put me to work almost immediately at his tent mixing feul for him and running around the pits to other racers tents getting certain parts that he needed or taking parts to other teams whatever they needed and running the feul I mixed to where David’s pit stop spot was for when he pulled in waiting for him!I was 10 years old then and that was my first time my parents drove me from reno to concord to uncle Floyd’s and jumped into his car heading to monterey(seemed like uncle Floyd was in a race of his own getting there remembering how scared I was in the car)as a child was used to the way people drove in reno Nevada, definitely not how crazy California’s drove on their freeways wich was very intense for me to experience at the time and remembering that like we did the trip yesterday!!!One more thing I remember was uncle Floyd taking me thru his office on our way out to the garage to get into the car he was given to test drive and write a article the cars performance on the trip was the picture of David’s #72 Honda and that he did the design of the bikes colors and the pinstripes and I do believe he just finished David’s helmet to match the bike and it rode on the back seat in the car behind me all the way to Monterey for the race!that weekend has always been in a special place in my heart and Iwill always treasure the time I had,it was one of the best trips I ever made from reno to my uncle Floyd Busbys for a race to see with him and my mom and dad!!!
