Monster Moriwaki Lives

A big thanks to Mark Coughlin for sending in this shot of racing history. This photo shows Harry Vanderlinden racing an ex-Doc Kieffer Moriwaki powered by an ex-Rainey/Lawson/Muzzy Kawasaki S1 motor at the Road America AHRMA event last month.

Kieffer raced this Moriwaki in AMA Formula Road Race Nationals in the early 1980s. It was a really cool era of road racing where the AMA allowed 1000cc, four-stroke F1 bikes, with custom frames, to race against the Yamaha TZ two-stroke hoard. This Moriwaki is a great example of the bikes built for that era.

It’s funny in a way because these machines are very similar in concept to modern day CRT MotoGP bikes.

It’s great that Coughlin has restored a number of ex-Doc Kieffer bikes and is putting them back on the track instead of a museum.

If you want to get a glimpse of the Moriwaki Monster, Coughlin reports it will be back on the track at the big Barber Vintage meet in October.

“We are going to Barber in the fall and I will buy some 17″ Dymags for the Monster so we can use slicks,” Coughlin says.
