“Otter” in Road America 750 Supersport Final (1989)

Ottis Lance races his KAYO Racing Suzuki GSXR750 in the AMA 750 Supersport race at Road America in June of 1989. “Otter” scored a couple of top-10 finishes in the series that year, including a ninth in this race. Even though competition in 750 Supersport was fierce that year, with riders like Jamie James, Doug Chandler, Scott Russell, David Sadowski, Mike Harth and Scott Zampach just to name a few, Lance was probably still better than a barely-inside-the top-10 rider.  The issue he had to overcome might have been tires. Yokohama was making a push in the AMA series during this era and Lance was racing for Kayo, which I believe was a Yokohama team. The tires were reportedly decent in the early laps, but faded rather quickly and riders struggled with grip late in races. Still, Lance did well enough to finish in the top 10 in the final standings that season.

Tires may have been the reason this fast Texan didn’t finish higher. (Larry Lawrence photo)

  1. Hmmm isn’t that about the time Yok started bringing in those 003’s or something? I recall they worked pretty well on my 400 but who could tell at Summit Point…

  2. Yes I rode and helped develop the 003 Yokohama tires in 1989 onl my 750 Supersport bike with Kayo Racing and Taylor Racing and they were ok and predictable until track temp went above 70 degrees! And then they turned into basicly a rain tire. They shed so much rubber that it was all stuck to the swingarm at the end of a race. They traeted me well though!

  3. Yeah, those tires were just bastards! Yokohama offered 5($K) if you got a win and a bunch of other contingency, so a bunch of guys tried them and basically turned themselves into back of the pack racers.
