This is a rare photo showing Kevin Schwantz, racing a Yoshimura Suzuki GSXR750 Superbike, leading Randy Renfrow in the AMA Formula One National at Sears Point in May of 1986. Schwantz rarely raced in the Formula One class and he had to be near the front at this point in the race since Renfrow finished second that day behind Kork Ballington. I don’t recall what happen to Schwantz, since he’s not listed in the final results. I’m not certain, but Yoshimura Suzuki may have been using the F1 race as an extra test session.

I remember being at the old Loudon Raceway when Kevin took his first ever practice laps. The announcer was timing his laps and giving his progress. First ever lap..20 seconds over track record, second lap 5 seconds over track record, third lap “track record”..it didn’t take long.
