Rick Kirk leads Dale Quarterley, Rich Oliver and Robbie Petersen in a WERA Pro Formula USA Heat race at Heartland Park Topeka in July of 1990. It was Kirk’s debut on a Yoshimura Suzuki Superbike. He was filling in for an injured Miguel Duhamel and had raced 750 Supersport with the team the weekend before in the AMA National at Road America. Kirk, on the Yoshimura Suzuki GSXR750 Superbike led, but Quarterley, who was riding a Dutchman Racing GSXR1100, out-motored Kirk to the finish in the qualifying Heat race. Petersen and Oliver, riding Marlboro Team Roberts Yamaha TZ250s, finished third and fourth respectively. In the final on Sunday Kirk finished fourth.

Kirk was really fast and sort of came out of nowhere. Great photo.
