This photo of Scott Russell racing the battered Solmax Racing Yamaha is symbolic of just how worn out a motorcycle was after racing in the brutal 24 Hours of Nelson Ledges. The decaying track was tough on motorcycles to begin with. Throw in rain, oil, frogs, snakes, deer, lightning and a variety of other challenges and you start to understand what made this race perhaps the most demanding of all motorcycle endurance races. This photo is from the 1987 race and in spite of the tattered looks of the Solmax machine, Russell, along with teammates Terry Bailey, Mark Schledorn, Jamie James and Ronnie Bowen, finished second overall. The event was won by the Human Race Team.

The aging circuit was tough on motorcycles and riders. I had one team manager tell me that after Nelson you pretty much had to start over with a new bike at the next race. (Larry Lawrence photo)
