I thought one of the coolest what-ifs of all time was when Clark said he wishes he would have enter John Kocinski in the Daytona 200 in 1989 on the Yamaha FZR600 he won the Supersport race on. According to Clark, with the lap times Kocinski was turning and needing only a single fuel stop, Kocinski would have easily won the race!

I am very confused, Larry. Kenny had retired well before 1989. I think it may have been late in 1986. Larry Griffis had replaced him as VP of the Racing department by 1987, for sure. ’87 & ’88 were lean years for Yamaha AMA roadracing, but good for WERA National Endurance teams running Yamahas.

What can I say? Clark told me he left in ’89 and had vivid memories of the FZR600 launch. Here’s evidence he was still there in late 1987:

Just found the news item in AR – Yamaha announced Clark left the company on Oct. 23, 1989.
