Eidenberger Gets Away

John Eidenberger leads a talented group of riders in an AMA/CCS Middleweight Supersport race at Grattan Raceway in July of 1987. Eidenberger got the jump on the field and pulled away to a convincing victory. Right behind Eidenberger in this photo are Ed Key (No. 34), Boonie Knott, Tom Kipp (No. 13), Jim Still, Terry Hampton (No. 43), unknown rider No. 85 and Fritz Kling (No. 421). Hampton probably had one of his best races of the year. He got bumped at the start and fell back. He ripped through the field, eventually moved into second and was turning faster lap times than Eidenberger, he closed the gap but Hampton couldn’t overcome the big lead Eidenberger had built. I remember this being a Saturday race and many of the riders drove that night to Blackhawk Farms to race in a WERA event, also paying Honda contingency.

  1. This was a memorable weekend for me. Not only for the crazy schedule of racing Saturday at Grattan and Sunday at Blackhawk but for the mixed results. My teammate Gary Gibson crashed out of this race and even though he made to trip to Blackhawk he was too injured to race. I had an engine issue in this event whereas it was intermittently dropping a cylinder. I’m fairly certain I didn’t make a penny of Honda money in this one. We later found a diaphragm leak in one carb.

Gary let me use his bike for Sunday’s race and I seam to recall wining it. I was highly motivated by the previous days result.

John was always very fast and always in contention. Those were great races with great bikes.
