In the Palm of his Hand

I love this photo. I don’t know what Ed Key is doing here (possibly catching one of the other mini-bike riders), but he must be doing something pretty special – check out the reaction of the crowd! They are really enjoying the race. That’s Scott Zampach in the cutoff jeans, Rich Doan in the bicycle getup, Stevie Patterson with the long tube socks, Dave Barnard (behind Patterson, holding a drink). The mini-bike races were a popular way to cap off the day at WERA races when things wrapped up early.

  1. Larry,

I don’t have any idea what exactly was going on here as I have no recollection of this particular race. I can say that the 50cc 4 stroke Suzuki that I am riding was very slow compared to the 2 stroke competition so I doubt I was catching anyone. If I had to speculate I would guess there may have been a “moment” just before this picture was taken.

One thing I do remember, those mini bike races sure were fun!
