Shobert Races to Road Atlanta Superbike Win (1988)

When Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz left AMA Superbike to compete on the GP circuit in 1988, it left a big void in the American championship. Stepping up to fill that void and win the 1988 AMA Superbike Championship was none other than former flat tracker Bubba Shobert. Like Rainey the year before did with Schwantz, Shobert barely held off a Yoshimura Suzuki rider, this time Doug Polen. Shobert took that year’s crown over Polen by a scant four points. This is a photo of Shobert racing to victory at Road Atlanta, most likely in turn six or maybe seven, on the factory Honda VFR750.
