Underdog Mathews

Stephen Mathews showed up to the WERA Pro Formula USA Series race at Road Atlanta in May of 1992 with a Ducati 888 Superbike. Normally that would be a potent enough machine to be a threat to win, but not in an F-USA race where Mathews probably felt like racing his Ducati was like wielding a pocketknife against a samurai warrior. In spite of going up against the monster machines of F-USA, Matthews, the 1991 AMA Pro Twins GP2 champ, held his own to finish fifth.
