Elkhart Lake Supersport Scrum (1988)

Scott Russell (No. 22) and John Ashmead (No. 37) battle side by side at Road America in June of 1988 during the AMA 600 Supersport final. This was the year many of the top factory-backed riders were on Suzuki Katana 600s, but the Honda 600 Hurricanes were still superior, so it was a good time for Honda riders to score upset wins. It wouldn’t happen on this day though. In spite of the advantage the high-speed Road America circuit gave the Honda riders it was Suzuki mounted Doug Polen taking the victory. Honda riders Ashmead and Scott Zampach finished second and third. Behind Russell and Ashmead in this shot are David Sadowski (No. 4), Polen, Zampach (No. 204), unknown rider (No. 117), John Eidenberger (No. 17), Britt Turkington (No. 280), Morgan Murphy (No. 30) and Russ Paulk (No. 15).
