Cooley at a Hot Heartland Park Topeka (1990)

Wes Cooley races a Valvoline Suzuki ahead of a couple of other riders in the WERA Pro Formula USA event at Heartland Park Topeka in July of 1990. Cooley was running sixth when the near triple-digit heat got to him and forced him to pull out of the race. It was great to have Cooley, a former two-time AMA Superbike Champion, racing the end of his career in the Formula USA Series. It helped give the series a big name. Even though he was past his prime after making a comeback from severe injuries suffered at Sears Point in 1985, Cooley was always a fan favorite whenever he raced.
