Sharing the Track at Road Atlanta

Bob Bulmer (No. 43), Jim Rice (No. 2) and Ron Pierce (No. 37) race through turn five at Road Atlanta while they share the track with the ambulance during the AMA National Road Race in 1971. Funny thing is 20 years later I shot the very same angle with what I think is the same ambulance on the track. Pierce, along with teammate Jody Nicholas, were both disqualified in one of the more bizarre DQs in AMA racing history. For some reason the factory Suzuki team decided to set up their pits back in the back section of the track off turn seven. It sounds crazy, but my guess is Suzuki posted a crew member out there with a gas can to fill up Pierce and Nicholas’ motorcycles during the race to save time rather than pull into the regular pit area. This photo is part of the excellent Bud Turner Collection.
