Click on the first photo – you can almost see the smile on the face of Dale Burroughs (No. 601) here leading the start of a WERA sprint race at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway in March of 1987. This looks to be a Suzuki contingency race and riders took these races seriously. Burroughs, known primarily as a leading endurance racer, finds himself unexpectedly leading a very talented pack of riders that includes Mike Harth (No. 88), Ron Ewerth (behind Harth), Kevin Rentzell (No. 48) and Paul Bray (No. 11). To say there was pressure on Burroughs trying to hold off this horde would be a major understatement. The second frame shows the moment the overachieving Burroughs falls back to earth. The pace was just a little higher than Dale could carry on that day and eventually he ran off the track. Hey, at least it had to be fun leading those guys while it lasted.
