The Steel City MX National is penultimate round of the 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing. This Saturday’s Labor Day Weekend tradition in Delmont, Pa., will be officially known as the FMF Steel City National.
Looking back to 2004, Ricky Carmichael wrapped up his fifth consecutive AMA Chevrolet 250cc Motocross Championship at Steel City. The then 24-year-old Honda rider from Havana, Fla., won his 11th straight national and was just a single victory away from turning in another undefeated season.
“This winter I just sat in front of the T.V. watching supercross and dreaming about getting back to this point,” said Carmichael, who sat out the 2004 AMA Supercross Series after having knee surgery. “I want to thank everyone who helped me get to this point. Winning five straight 250 championships is something I never imagined I could do when I started racing.”
Carmichael was the only rider in AMA racing history to win five straight motocross titles. In 2002 he also became the first to go an entire season undefeated. He went on the following Sunday in San Bernardino, and completed a second perfect season.
Jeremy McGrath, the hugely popular seven-time AMA Supercross champ, came out of semi-retirement to race in his first AMA national in over four years. He ran as high as fourth early in the second moto before his bike experienced mechanical problems. McGrath finished 20th.
James Stewart won the 125cc division on a Kawasaki to become the all-time wins leader in AMA 125cc Motocross with 27-career class wins.
