For a time in the early 1990s the AMA road races featured a race called the Monster Bike Shootout. It pitted the top finishing endurance teams in a five-lap sprint complete with a pit stop for rider change. This is the start of the Mid-Ohio Monster Bike Shootout at Mid-Ohio in August of 1990. The winner of the Shootout was Tom Kipp and Dale Quarterley on the Dutchman Racing Suzuki (No. 1). The rider changes were quite a sight to see. There were really no rules, so teams would fly into the pits, one rider would jump off the bike and the other would jump on and go. I seem to remember with some teams the bike never stopped rolling during the exchange. The other teams starting the race included Boulder Yamaha (No. 45), Team Magic (No. 22), Team Toomer Too (No. 12), Keystone Racing (No. 25) and Dutchman II (No. 3).

Wow,
The good old days of circus racing, no pit speed limits… And I forgot how close that wall was!! To bad it took that kid getting killed to get it moved.
