Nardiello Gets Flag from “Airborne Al” Wilcox

Steve Nardiello celebrates as he takes victory and receives the checkered flag from legendary race starter “Airborne Al” Wilcox in a WERA sprint race at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway in February of 1986. It was the very first race weekend at the track, parts of which were still under construction at the time. Wilcox, who passed away in February of 2011, was recently inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

  1. What Steve said…

I can honestly say (and a few others will agree) that I always felt safer, when Al was in charge/flagging.

  2. Finally, Al Wilcox is inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame for the class of 2012! This man dedicated 70 years of his life to motorcycle racing and the racing family! I called him “Motorcycle Racing’s National Treasure!” Thank you Larry Lawrence for interviewing AL WILCOX for Cycle News ARCHIVES. Al loved reading your articles. That was the first story he would read, and then devour the rest of Cycle News. We will be travelling to Las Vegas for the Hall of Fame ceremony. Who wants to join us on November 16th at Red Rocks Casino in Las Vegas?
