Chuck Stephen leads what is probably a WERA A Production race at Nattarg in June of 1986. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of the Nattarg circuit, it’s simply Grattan spelled backwards. That was one of the beauties of Grattan Raceway is you could race it in either direction (the normal direction was clockwise) and you had a completely new set of challenges. Stephen is leading a very talented field that includes Steve Landrey (No. 334), Kim Papierniak (No. 558), Ed Key (No. 1), Dave Schmidt (No. 46), Fritz Kling (No. 421), Bill Hougaboom (No. 426), Michael Gallaway (No. 600), Chuck Magnusson (No. 151) and Dave Knapp (No. 587).

Key in fourth, Kling in fifth…
It goes to show you how completely opposite the track was when run counter clockwise.
It really WASN’T designed to go that direction and had some very sketchy areas that were off camber and air born.
Another great photo, Larry.

I loved that track
Sadly Fritz and Galloway have died early.
Anyone know where Dave Schmidt is?

I disagree. The track was built to go both ways, according to EJ (the owner). There were off camber corners both directions, and the ‘jump’ was much safer going backwards, as you could get air going the normal way, and that made it very difficult to make the corner right after it!
This had to be early in the race, as I don’t recall Chuck doing that well against guys like Fritz and Ed Key.

I was racing on a shoestring, and had a few moments.
I did not know of that photo. Thanks Larry. Sorry to here about Fritz.
