Scott Zampach (center, in gray shirt), along with some of his crew and fellow racers, watch a race at the 1987 WERA Grand National Final at Road Atlanta.
Zampach was a first-year expert that year and on hand at the GNF to race in the lucrative Suzuki GSXR Cup Finals.
Just the year before he burst onto the scene as a novice leading the first half of the Honda 500 Interceptor Cup final at the GNF before being passed by Doug Polen on a drying track.
Zampach was one of the best up-and-coming road racers of the era, but to illustrate how deep the Suzuki Cup races were in those days, Zampach finished fifth in the GSXR750 Final and seventh in the GSXR1100 final.
He still earned nearly $2000 just in Suzuki money, not to mention other contingencies that were available.
