Schwarzbach and the Z-Man

Larry Schwarzbach leads 1989 AMA Supersport Champion Scott Zampach at the 1990 Mid-Ohio 600cc Supersport race. (I believe that could be Michael Barnes just behind Zampach and perhaps Scott Willock at the tail end.) Many thought Schwarzbach was an overnight wonder when he got his factory Yamaha ride with Vance & Hines in 1991, but in fact Larry had been toiling away, mainly as a privateer in the Supersport ranks for three years, turning in great ride after great ride before earning his factory gig. Mid-Ohio in 1990 was a big weekend for Schwarzbach. He finished a very strong fourth in the 600cc Supersport race and also raced his Yamaha FZR600 in the 750cc Supersport race and finished fourth and first privateer. It was an impressive outing. He was well on his way to getting the ride he deserved the next season.

  1. Larry was good. Too bad it ended so early.

Zampach should have had a factory ride but didn’t get it even after winning the championship. Bullshit deal for him.

  2. It’s hard to believe how long it’s been since that horrible crash that claimed Larry a young and very talented rider I took my new girlfriend at the time her first time to a motorcycle race and for her to see that tragedy we were right their in the carousel and I was shooting video of the race when it happened it marred the rest of the race weekend. Nancy my girlfriend her best friend was a surgery tech was on the team that worked on Larry when they life flighted him to Cleveland he never regained consciousness kept him on life support said he was an organ donor but the good of it was some other individuals who probably lived because of his organ donation.
