Hopperstad at Road America (1990)

John Hopperstad is the very picture of a smooth riding style as he speeds through a corner on his Boulder Yamaha sponsored Yamaha FZR750 Superbike during the AMA Superbike race at Road America, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, in June of 1990. In spite of being considerably taller than most motorcycle racers, Hopperstad managed a successful career in AMA Superbike and AMA Endurance racing from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s. In Superbike Hopperstad scored a handful of top-10 finishes, including in this race at Road America. He also took a very solid sixth in the Daytona 600cc Supersport race in 1990. Gold Hill Racing was the endurance team he raced for and they won races and were a leading championship contender in endurance and Super Teams competition.

  1. I love happening upon this short piece on my old MRA roadracing friend John Hopperstad. The copy editor in my feels obliged to say that’s an OW01 that Hoppy is on and not an FZR750, though I know he raced both.
