Wanner and McDonald Wheel to Wheel

Kurt Wanner (No. 76) and Sam McDonald ((No. 29) battle side by side in a WERA B Superbike Expert race at Gateway International Raceway in April of 1989. Wanner’s Suzuki GSXR750 and McDonald’s Yamaha FZR600 were well matched at the technical Gateway circuit. Wanner had the advantage on the straights, but MCDonald’s quicker handling FZR came to its strength on the numerous tight and twisty sections of the circuit. In this photo you can see McDonald carrying more momentum and going around the outside of Wanner. Late in the race McDonald managed to put a gap on Wanner, showing that a great rider on a nice handling machine is tough to beat regardless of displacement disadvantage.
