Scott Leads Christensen in Daytona 600 Supersport (1989)

Mike Scott, of Macungie, Pa., leads Gus Christensen in the 1989 Daytona 600 Supersport race. Scott was a flat tracker, turned road racer. This was his first pro race as a road racer and he finished a very respectable 16th in the 80-rider Supersport field at Daytona that year. Christensen finished 31st. Scott said everyone had raced Honda’s in 1988 and he figured he’d be one of the few Yamaha’s at that year’s Daytona Supersport race. “I think there were 80 bikes in the field and when I showed up probably 70 of them were Yamahas,” he said. On a bone stock bike Scott ran as high as ninth before his clutch started to go. Scott went on to hold flat track national No. 70 in the early 1990s. Today he runs Scott Powersports in Coopersburg, Pa. and builds Grand National Kawasakis for Johnny Lewis.

  1. Larry, are you sure that’s Daytona? I can’t think what right-hand turn is that tight and has grass behind it, except turn six, which would put you and your camera on the banking.

  2. Peter,

You might be right. That could very well could be coming out of turn six. It looks more like six than the second apex of one, but I have no idea how I would have got this angle. Maybe at the fence with a really long lens (600mm). Now I’m scratching my head. I know for sure it’s Daytona though.
