Romero on the Trident

Another in the Bud Turner Collection from Road Atlanta in April of 1971. This is Gene Romero taking a turn on the factory Triumph Trident. The factory Triumph and BSA Triples were redesigned for the ’71 season using a super low profile in order to make them more streamlined and thus faster. The new “Low Boy” bikes were developed using extensive wind tunnel testing. I once asked Romero about the bike and he reported it to be very compact for a three-cylinder 750. Every effort was made to make these bikes as small and light as possible. I believe this was the first year that disc brakes were used on the British factory bikes. Romero is wearing the No. 1 plate, having won the AMA National Championship in 1970. He raced to sixth at Road Atlanta and had another solid run in the series, eventually ending up runner up to Dick Mann in that year’s championship.
