Former Canadian Superbike Champ George Morin (No. 244 Suzuki) is in front of a charging Freddie Spencer (No. 19) going through the chicane at Daytona International Speedway during the 1982 Bell Superbike 100. This was late in the race and Spencer was about to put Morin a lap down as he’d just done to Morin’s fellow Canadian Rueben McMurter (No. 131 Kawasaki). Spencer rode his factory Honda to victory in the Daytona Superbike race that year over Mike Baldwin and Roberto Pietri to give Honda a complete sweep of the podium finishers. Morin finished 14th and McMurter 18th in that year’s event.

Great pic Larry, nice find!
I think few would argue this was the Golden Era of big bore Superbike racing, with CB900F Hondas, Z1 Kawi’s and GS1000’s like the S model Morin is on.
For the next year, ’83, the rules changed and the 1025cc bikes became 750’s and “little” bikes like the Interceptor replaced these fire breathing wobblers, seen in that pic.
Great stuff, keep ’em coming!

Gordo, Yeah, you can tell in this photo that George is riding at a “sporting” pace. You know, sort of going good, but not pushing. Freddie’s going like a scalded cat.

I agree Larry. I finally found one (GS1000S) a couple years ago and although I rarely ride it, it’s a must have/never sell in my little collection. Never forget Cooley and Crosby on those things in ’80 and ’81. I’ll try and send you some pics. He was just a year older than me (Freddie) but man ‘o man, what a gift for speed that guy had.
I think Morin’s going fast, just a different riding style and ya can’t hold it against him (or anyone back then) if they weren’t Freddie-Fast !

If I remember there was a red/white paint scheme too, but blue/white was far more common.

Red and white was the European/UK livery. US got blue/white to my knowledge. (never knew of any red/wh US models)
