I want to thank Harley-Davidson and Paul James for allowing me to help with research on this project.

I want to thank Larry Lawrence, not only for making people aware of the racism which took place, but also in keeping my father’s (Leroy “Buster” Payne) memory alive. They say as long as someone remembers you, you are not dead. I believe that because today 32 years after my father’s death, people are seeing and reading about his efforts to break the race barrier as a “champion.” His goal was always first place. I remember him vividly as he came around to pick up that checkered flag. What a smile.
