The crumbling hulk of a once great Speedway

Photographer Tom Riles and I recently visited the old crumbling Marlboro Motor Raceway, site of a 1965 AMA Road Race National. The place is still there, but hasn’t been touched since the late 1960s. Check out the story of the track in this week’s Archives.

  1. I remember going there as a kid with my Mom and Dad. We went in a Plymouth Business coupe. Later was a 1964 Chevy pick-up. In 1965 my Dad’s friend John Chester was 2nd in the Amateur Final. (They call them Juniors now.) My friend Art was down there recently and was asked to leave by folks living near the property. He too was taking photos. Looks like you lucked out with this one. Sad to see a local track like this one and Vista Raceway rot like this.

    1. Mark,

Yes, there was a trailer with some guy who sounded Russian (could hardly speak english). I went up to ask permission to take some shots. Explained who I was. He was reluctant, but told us we could get a few quick shots. We were there maybe a 1/2 hour and the guy came out and told us we needed to leave. Sort of strange. We heard some rumors about the group that owns the track, but who knows.
