John Davis (No. 990 Yamaha RZ350) leads a group of riders in the C Production Novice race in the 1984 WERA Grand National Finals at Road Atlanta. Davis was one of the leading riders in that class out of the CRRC (now CMRA) club in Texas. Here Davis leads Kris Frost (No. 616) and Rex Miller taking the inside line on his No. 679 Honda Interceptor. You can just make out Robby Braunscheidel on the No. 665 Interceptor leading up the next group. These riders were battling for a top-10 finish. Frost was the highest finisher of this group taking fifth in a race that was loaded with talent including Ron Ewerth, Kurt Hall and Jamie James. Kenneth Davis (no relation to John Davis that I’m aware of) won the race. I think Kenneth Davis raced a Yamaha RZ500 in the event. There were over 700 riders in the GNF that year.

Looks like Brian French on the RZ500 towards the back of that group. Frost looks like a GPz550 with the fairing removed, which would make a 5th place finish all the more impressive.
Was Robby the original ‘Elbowz’, or what? He sure was a gangly guy, and he hardly fit on that Interceptor.

Kevin,
No wonder you were such a good racer – eyes of an eagle. I think you’re right about French. Robby was long and lean and fast. I was at his final race. Willow Springs. He’d just set the track record at Grattan, went out to do F-USA and bit it big time out of turn 9. I hauled his bike out there and back. I think that one did him in.

It’s a bummer about Robby, as I think he really had the talent to go somewhere. The way he rode, kind of reminds me of Schwantz.
So check out the look on Miller’s face in this pic….doesn’t he kind of look like “not sure this is going to work!”. That looks like coming through the esses, and that line isn’t really where you want to be through there.
