The GTU podium at the EBC Brakes Endurance Series race at Road America in June of 1988. Standing on the top rung of the podium is Team Longevity’s John Long (L) and his teammate Kevin Blais. Long and Blais raced a Ducati 851 in the class against primarily 600 Supersport style competition. Why the 851 was allowed to race in GTU instead of the GTO class is another subject, but Long and Blais made the most of it. Finishing second, just a lap behind Longevity, was first-time endurance team Chic Magnet Racing with Jerry Peterson (on the far left) and Dick Koehler on a Honda CBR600. Koehler was rear ended with just two laps to go, but was able to limp home to the checkered flag. Third place went to Team Miller American with riders John Anderson, Mike Ruehle, Scotty Williams and Mike Moores riding a Suzuki Katana 600.

That was one of the hottest summers ever and John Lindley and I must have spent at least a third of the weekend in the car with the A/C cranked. Great times though!
