Willow Springs F-USA Podium Exposure Problem

This is a photo of the podium celebration from the 1991 WERA Pro Formula USA race at Willow Springs Raceway. This photo turned out to be basically unusable. I was trying to find an angle where you could see the riders on the podium and the big crowd on hand for the ceremonies. The problem was the podium was in deep shadow while the onlookers were in bright sunlight presenting a nearly impossible exposure challenge. A fill flash may have helped balance the light, but when I got into position and saw the lighting I probably should have just focused on either the podium or the fans, but not both together. Today with digital and Photoshop I might have been able to make this shot work.

A podium/fan shot from the ’91 Willow Springs F-USA race. It was a good thought, but the lighting situation made getting the photo practically impossible. (Larry Lawrence photo)

  1. Hi Larry. It looks like Rich Oliver on the Marlboro Roberts Yamaha YZR 500 won the race with Team mate Robbie Peterson and #24 Chuck Graves? on the Team Hammer Valvoline Suzuk. Keep up the good work.
