The Mid-Ohio AMA 250 Grand Prix race on August 5, 1990, was a battle of the nicknames. This photo shows No. 22 Al Salaverria (Al Sal) leading Doug “Bionic” Brauneck (No. 46) and Jon “Corndog” Cornwell. As a bonus, the fourth-place rider is No. 70 Darrell “Boom Boom” Cooney. The race came down to a last lap battle between Salaverria, Brauneck and Cornwell. All three led at one point on the final lap as they swapped back and forth. Finally Al Sal out-braked the other two at the end of the back straight and then kept a tight line the rest of the way. The San Francisco-based rider Salaverria held off Brauneck by 0.69 seconds with Cornwell and very close third. Notice the massive crowd on the hillside. Mid-Ohio was just entering a long peak as a spectator event going into the 1990s.
