(NEWS RELEASE)
Long Beach, California: Today, October 3, 6-8 pm, meet author Melissa Holbrook Pierson, (author of the motorcycling cult-classic The Perfect Vehicle) and extreme long-distance record-setting rider John Ryan, at the Yellow Devil Gear Exchange, 2841 E. Broadway, Long Beach CA 562-856-1248. These two will discuss Melissa’s newest book, The Man Who Would Stop at Nothing: Long Distance Motorcycling’s Endless Road, and personalized, signed, hardcover editions of her book will be available for $24.95.
In the decade since writing The Perfect Vehicle, Melissa left motorcycles behind, got married, had a son, and authored two non-motorcycling books. Then she rediscovered the community and culture she’d left behind, renewing her love of motorcycling and returning to the highways with a dedication to long-distance riding. Her new book covers her personal experiences of self-discovery and the achievements of her friend, Iron Butt Association (IBA) member and extreme long-distance record-holder John Ryan.
John Ryan was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic in 1975. After joining the IBA in 2003, he combined his natural lack of circadian rhythm, minimal need for sleep under duress, and love of motorcycling, to complete in a number of unprecedented record-setting rides, most notably the one featured in Melissa’s latest book, from the North Shore of Alaska to Key West, Florida in an impossible 86 hours and 31 minutes, a record not endorsed nor sanctioned by the IBA.
